METHOD

 

The process of a project starts with many studies, if it is a figure or portrait I usually hire models ( I try not to use photographs unless it is a comission for a portrait and the sitter can't pose ) because is the way to capture not only their features but also their feelings, it develops a conexion between you and the sitter and that get printed in the canvas. A project like that usually takes from 3 to 5 weeks, depending of the dimension of the canvas and complexity of composition, working with the model 5 days a week for 3 hours everyday.

COMMISSIONS:

Commissions can be made of any subject, most common is portrait but also you can order figures (like family members, couples and/or nude,s), still life and/or landscapes.

Portrait Session: schedule a meeting to see best time for both sides, I always recommend do sessions in the morning as it is when there is better light, otherwise client has an specific idea. I usually work with natural light, this is way I pinpoint this.

Where do sessions take place? sessions take place in my studio, client's house or any other specific location.

How long does a session last? I have two different session options. A sitting session where I choose the pose and do a color study, I might take some photographs as well if the sitter can only pose few times to help me with the process, this might last 2 or 3 hours each time. And a photo session where I take different photographs in different poses and then choose one for the project, this one will take place just once and last about 1 or 2 hours.

Artwork pick up: this will depend on what your order is. Drawings take approximately 1 to 2 weeks. Paintings usually take longer, they go up to 4 or 5 weeks depending on composition, complexity and size.

Material preparation: I prepare my canvases by hand or if I buy them already made I make sure they have the best quality. If I make them, first of all, I prepare the ground or priming with rabbit skin glue, at least two coats. When it is dry, a coat of lead white pure is put if it is on clothe; and with gesso vero if it is on board, making sure I use the finest art materials, or even sometime a mix of both to bring together a bit of both characteristic. Always using only the best linens and cottons for my canvasses and often preparing panels for landscaping or for attaching the cloths to them (making them as less absorbent as possible, so the colours will be more luminous and give durability to the paint). Already made linen canvas I like is 'claessens'. I use mediums taken from proven old master recipes and paints sometimes made by myself or with the best qualities brands such as Artist of Winsor and Newton, Old Holland, Gamblin, Michael Harding, etc. These brands select carefully the finest pigments and thorough grinding into cold-pressed linseed oil that ensure them not to separate and to last longer. I bring together the best of the ancient world techniques with the contemporary researches.
